Chapter Six

After what I have officially dubbed the Best Date Ever, Graham and I spend what feels like every waking moment together. Working in his grandfather’s house, sitting with Doc beside the creek, hanging out at my shop…anything just to be in the same space.

And I am completely smitten. He isn’t just a cute guy. He’s caring, patient, and kind. He fits in with my friends. And he makes me feel at ease in a way I haven’t felt in a long time—maybe ever. A part of me is scared because every time I’ve felt just a fraction of this happiness, it’s ended in heartbreak. But I’m optimistic to a fault and can’t help but be hopeful. With every new friend he makes or new place I introduce him to, his connection to Juniper Creek—and to me—grows stronger.

Working together, we’ve been able to clear out a lot of items from the house. Some of them we put on consignment at my store, and others go to collectors around the world. Now and then, as we’re going through the house, we’ll come across a piece of furniture that he tells me wants to keep, like his grandfather’s giant desk or the corner table that fits perfectly in one particular spot. Almost like he’s planning to keep not just furniture, but the house. We haven’t talked about the future yet, but I promise myself that I will bring it up soon, scary or not.

Regardless, he is planning on having an estate sale to sell the items he doesn’t want to keep. I still have to go through and price some of the smaller items before the sale, and that’s my plan for today.

After Doc and I spend some time down by the creek that morning, I leave him sleeping at home and head to the Buzzed Bean to pick up our usual coffee order. As I’m hunting for a parking space out front, though, my phone dings with a text message.
